Street Photography: Chatuchak Weekend Market

May 17 at Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Chatuchak market is the largest market in Thailand and largest of the world. Frequently called J.J., it covers over 35 acres (1.13 km²) and contains upwards of 15,000 stalls. It is estimated that the market receives between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors each day. Most stalls only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The market offers a wide variety of products including household items, clothing, Thai handicrafts, religious artifacts, collectibles, foods, and live animals.

Ghost City Adventure

Yesterday (May 10, 2008), we went to ghost city of Bangkok called Muang Thong Thani. It was built on barren fields on the edge of Bangkok during Thailand’s boom as a product of free capital flows and financial liberalization.

It is a dazzling complex of two dozen huge gray-white buildings soaring nearly 30 stories high, and surrounded by streets lined with shops, town houses, and detached homes. Walk closer and it feels eerie, for it is a ghost city.
